Richard Gatete is the Air Navigation Service Expert for the Support to the Air Transport Sector Development (SATSD) Programme. He is a Telecommunications Engineer with a MSc. of Telecommunications Management and over 16 years work experience in aviation particularly in Air Navigation Service provision including planning, procurement, deployment, commissioning and management of Air Navigation Service infrastructure (CNS/ATM Systems) and operations.
He started his aviation career at Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority as a RADAR Engineer, and progressively grew in rank to Senior CNS Engineer before later joining the EGNOS- Africa JPO, now SatNav-Africa in Dakar Senegal as a GNSS Expert.
Prior to joining the COMESA Secretariat, Richard worked with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as the CNS/ ATM Expert and Head/ Technical department for the Flight Information Services for Somalia (FISS) headquartered in Nairobi and later in Mogadishu- Somalia.
Richard played a crucial role in the transfer and handover of the management of Mogadishu FIR from ICAO to the Federal Government of Somalia after 27 years. For his role, he was recognized with an Award for the outstanding achievement.
